Author Notebook started from a simple frustration: novel-length fiction usually ends up spread across a word processor, a notes app, a spreadsheet for characters, and a folder of reference images. None of those tools were built for long-form fiction specifically, so writers end up doing extra admin work just to keep track of their own story.
The goal is a single, calm workspace that handles chapters, characters, worldbuilding, story structure, notes, and progress together — without forcing every writer into the same rigid template.
Author Notebook is local-first by design: your project lives on your device by default and works offline on the Windows desktop app. Cloud sync is optional and separate, for writers who want it. AI features follow the same philosophy — optional, off by default, and designed to ask questions rather than write for you.
The app is currently in public beta. That means active development, regular updates, and an open channel for feedback that genuinely shapes what gets built next.
